“Murder, Mess, and the Tangerine Dress pulls you in from the first page. I was immediately drawn in and didn’t want to put the book down. It’s a mystery with many well developed characters, each with many layers, just like life none of the people are black and white, but rather various shades of gray with their good and bad parts. It’s a mystery but with many laugh out loud funny lines. So drawn to some of the main characters that shed a tear of joy at end…..Definitely a must read!”
Loved Every Page of The Tangerine Dress!

This was such a fantastic read, rich with interesting, well-developed characters and relationships. The author does an amazing job putting her characters into surprising situations and mixing humor with moments of real emotion. Best of all is the moving perspective on love, commitment and what it means to be a family.
This sweet story sets up a situation that accurately reflects just how complicated life and family can be. Never is life what it seems from the “outside” - especially to those not in the circle but even more so, those on the “inside” of the circle can also have misperceptions about the ones they love the most. The author expertly wove a charming story describing how assumptions, passions and fears, if not expressed as a way to protect our hearts, can tie us down and prevent us from seeing and living the life that we deserve. The characters are so endearing, and it is a gift to join them on their journey as they seek to become “unmoored.”
I fell in love with Mrs. Mango In the 1st paragraph of this book. And laughed and cried and was amazed all the way through. Thank you Lynn Rankin-Esquer for building a wonderful world for me to enjoy.
You can't help but fall in love with the heroine of the book "Jacqueline". The author beautifully develops this endearing young middle school character as someone you can identify with as she faces adversity both big and small in her life. Get ready to jump on a roller coaster ride of emotions along with Jacqueline such as despair, insecurity, anxiety, humor, courage and triumph. The heroine in the story cleverly uses personality traits from classic books that she has read to help her find creative ways to problem solve and cope with the issues that are overtaking her life. Jacqueline, when life throws me adversity, I will think of you! This book is a stunning debut from new voice I can't wait to hear again.
Wow! Loved this book. What a page-turner from the start. It was a joy and privilege to follow the development of the main character, Jacqueline. Every parent of teenagers should read this. Every teenage girl and boy NEED to read this. Its hilarious and shocking at the same time. Its a great reminder to every adult, of what middle and high school was like, with all its emotional and social swings and roundabouts. The book follows the trials and tribulations of a 14 year old girl who has to deal with moving to a new town, new school and a tumultuous home-life.
This book is not only an entertaining work of fiction, but a vital handbook on how to survive as a teenager.
You want to scream at the parents "What are you thinking?"
You want to scream at the teenagers "Why do you have to be so mean?"
You want to scream at the author "More Please !!!"
Rankin-Esquer hits it out of the park with this read! I love books that clearly develop characters, have a hero(ine) and that make a point. The Paperback Cape does all that and more through a poignant story of the main character’s (Jackie) teenage drama and how she balances school life and family life. The author cleverly weaves in themes from classic novels she read as a child that serve as character traits that the main character adopts into her own life to help her through tumultuous times. Very witty, funny, touching, and a good reminder of how fragile we feel as teens (and adults!) and how some of our toughest times in life can end up making us stronger and helping us identify who we really are in this world. I recommend this book to all teenagers and parents of teens.
